Osteopathic manipulative treatment, or OMT, is hands-on care. It involves using the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness or injury. With OMT, osteopathic physicians use their hands to diagnose injury and illness and to encourage your body’s natural tendency toward good health and healing by moving your muscles and joints with techniques that include stretching, “cracking of joints”, gentle pressure or resistance.
In1999, a study released in the New England Journal of Medicine noted that OMT is not only an effective and low-cost form of treatment for low back pain, but also a teatment that decreased the need for medications and surgery. In addition to being used to treat low back pain and musculoskeletal abnormalities, OMT can be used to treat asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, tennis and golfer’s elbow, menstrual pain, sinus disorders, constipation, and migraines.
During all medical appointments, you will be evaluated for the use and need of OMT. Treatments are only performed when medically necessary.
